Players in the sixth flight of the $250K GTD PLO Multi-Flight had a very quick money bubble and Day Two bubble. Both bubble eliminations were courtesy of Matthew Newcombe.
On the first and only hand of hand-for-hand, Matthew Newcombe and Douglas Drees got all the chips in the middle blind versus blind on a flop of K♣9♠3♥.
Newcombe: A♦K♠6♥3♦
Drees: A♣K♥6♦2♣
Newcombe had top and bottom pair. Drees couldn't draw to a better two pair since both players shared kings and sixes. Drees was trapped and calling for clubs. Drees got the redraw card he wanted with the 8♣ turn.
The river even completed the backdoor flush draw that Drees was calling for but the 3♣ also delivered a full house for Newcombe, the covering stack. Drees was eliminated as the money bubble.
Not even thirty minutes later, Newcombe found himself multiway to a flop of A♣7♦6♦. Fujita checked the small blind and Newcombe led out for 12,500. Jiayi Yao raised to a pot-sized bet of 66,000. Yao was nearly all-in with 6,000 behind.
Doc Hollywood reluctantly folded on the button and Fujita followed suit from the small blind.
Newcombe thought about it for a bit, but just called and checked the 3♥ turn. Yao put his remaining 6,000 in the middle and told Newcombe he couldn't fold now. Newcombe called.
Newcombe: A♥8♦5♥3♦
Yao: A♦Q♦Q♠2♦
Board: A♣7♦6♦3♥4♠
The 4♠ completed the board. Yao had flopped the diamond nut flush draw but bricked out. Newcombe had flopped top pair with an open-ender, turned top and bottom pair, and made his straight on the river. Yao was eliminated in ninth place for $875. Players began to bag up for Sunday's Day Two. Newcombe bags the overall chip lead with 786,500.
